If you're going to the big island, you should be excited by the opportunity to go see a volcanic eruption happening in real life! There are a couple of good overlook spots around the rim of the crater which you can drive right up to.
Other than that, you won't notice anything out of the ordinary.

It wasn't a very active eruption when I did mine, but you could actually see glowing lava. Very, very amazing to see.
Kilauea is on the southeast side of the Big Island. Most of the tourist areas are on the west (leeward and therefore dry) side. But driving over to Hilo on the Saddle Road and then down to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is a real treat.

No, officials have closed part of the park but the rest of the island is safe.
